Der Umschlag des vorliegenden Buches zeigt drei Menschen, die das Gesprach zwischen der Medizin und der Padagogik beflugelt haben: Janusz Korczak, Maria Montessori und Viktor von Weizsacker. Der Arzt der Armen und Erzieher, der seine Kinder bis in den gemeinsamen Tod hinein nie im Stich gelassen hat, die Menschenrechte der Kinder achtend, trifft in einem der zwolf Teile dieses Buchs auf die judische Montessori-Padagogin Clara Grunwald, die wie er in unfassbarem Mut ihre Kinder vor der Vernichtung zu schutzen versucht hat. Viktor von Weizsackers anthropologische Medizin wird in den Kapiteln "Fragile Solidaritat" und "Anamnestische Solidaritat" in ihren Grundgedanken lebendig. Medizin und Menschlichkeit, Erziehung in und zu ihr hin - dieses Junktim zieht sich durch das Buch. Stets geht es darum, die Wurde der Schwachsten zu bewahren und darin den Aufbruch eines gemeinsamen Ethos zu entdecken. Im 5. Teil wird, angeregt von einem verwaltungsgerichtlichen Prozess, der Sinn des Studiums der Medizin diskutiert. Freuds beruhmtes Wort von den "Maschinengewehren hinter der Front" wird im 7. Teil aufgenommen. Die weiteren Teile fuhren hin zu dem Recht des Kindes auf gesunde Ernahrung ("Muttermilch in der Industriegesellschaft") und zu dem gefahrdeten Menschenrecht auf gesunde Nahrung. In den Schlussteilen wird die Gefahrdung der Menschenrechte durch biotechnokratische Reduktionismen angedeutet. Schliesslich wird noch ein Blick auf einen neuen Begriff der Pflegebedurftigkeit geworfen, auf ein Feld der Geragogik. So umspannt das Buch nicht allein die Lebenswege der Kinder, sondern auch die alter Menschen in der Hoffnung, das notwendige Gesprach auf vielen Ebenen zu starken. Das Gesprach zwischen der Padagogik und der Medizin hat der Verfasser immer wieder gesucht - auch in Aktionsgruppen und praktischen Initiativen.
