Es war im heißen Sommer neunzehnhundertelf, der Juli neigte sich dem Ende zu, ein heiterer Tag hielt seinen fast toskanisch blauen Himmel über München ausgespannt. Noch das gedämpfte Licht, das durch die rußigen Glasdächer des Hauptbahnhofes drang, trug Sonne in sich und ließ das Kunterbunt von sommerlich geputztem Menschenvolk, das unten auf den Steigen wimmelte, zu ruhiger Harmonie verschmelzen. Rauch puffte zornig oder wallte still aus stämmigen Lokomotivenschloten, er hüllte sich nach oben immer mehr in Glanz und floß unter dem Dach streifig zu Schwaden auseinander, durch die die Helle draußen wie durch einen zart gemusterten Achatschliff fiel, wechselnd von kaltem Weiß und duftigem Blaugrün über reich gestuftes Gelb bis zu den wie mit chinesischer Tusche untermalten Tinten eines warmen Brauns. Der alte Bahnhof, sonst als häßlich in der Welt verschrien, hatte seinen schönen Tag. Nur schade: unter all den Augen, die das sahen, bemerkten es kaum zwei. Die Reisezeit stand grade recht in Blüte, es herrschte ein erbittertes Gedräng, Mundarten aller deutschen und so mancher fremder Gaue wurden laut. Die meisten dieser Leute, ob sie nun keuchend mit den Ellbogen fochten oder müßig warteten, trugen den gehetzten, leergequälten Ausdruck im Gesicht, der sich von selber einstellt, wo der Mensch seinem ertiftelten Gemächte, der Maschine, gegenübertritt. Seit sie ihm Zeit spart, hat er keine Zeit. Ein solches Bahnhofspublikum aus der Verkrampftheit in entfernte Dinge loszureißen und ihm die Augen für die nahe Wirklichkeit zu öffnen, braucht es sinnfälligerer Reize als die Schönheit glanzdurchwobnen Rauches. Die Schönheit einer jungen Dame etwa, zumal wenn sie herausfordernd modisch aufgetakelt ist, bewirkt schon mehr; die allgemeinste Teilnahme aber, wenn dies Wort für diese Sache paßt, erringt sich stets, was durch Absonderlichkeit die Spottsucht weckt. Diese Art von Teilnahme erregte ein junger Herr, der eben aus der Schalterhalle trat. Wo er hier ging und stand, da wend
