Ähnlich verhält es sich auch mit dem Thema dieser Diplomarbeit: Die Gründe, Probleme und Perspektiven des Online-Engagements deutscher Tageszeitungen lassen sich am besten verstehen, wenn dabei der gesamte publizistische Globus, sprich der Medienmarkt mitsamt seinen Entwicklungen, Systemimmanenzen und spezifischen Transferprozessen im Blickfeld bleibt. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist eine zukunftsorientierte Bestandsaufnahme des bisherigen Online-Engagements deutscher Tageszeitungen, insbesondere der lokalen und regionalen Tageszeitungen. Hierbei sollen auch Beziehungen, Wechselwirkungen und mögliche Synergien zwischen den Print- und Onlineausgaben von Zeitungen beleuchtet werden. Fakt ist zwar, dass sich die anfänglichen Gewinnerwartungen vieler Verlagshäuser im Internet in den vergangenen Jahren nicht oder nur bedingt erfüllt haben. Und die Frage nach dem Warum soll in dieser Diplomarbeit Raum bekommen. Nicht minder wichtig ist aber auch die Frage, wie die Verlagshäuser mit dieser Erkenntnis umgehen und wie sich dies auf ihr Online-Engagement auswirkt. Gegliedert ist diese Arbeit nach vier Leitfragen: 1) Welches sind die generellen Trends der Medienentwicklung, in die das Online-Engagement der Verlage eingebettet ist? 2) Wie und weshalb präsentieren sich Zeitungen im Internet? 3) Welches sind die spezifischen Charakteristika und Rezeptionsmöglichkeiten von Print- und Onlinemedien? 4) Wie kann eine adäquate und zukunftsfähige mediale Arbeitsteilung zwischen der Print- und der Onlineausgabe einer Zeitung aussehen? Die These dieser Arbeit lautet: Zeitungen müssen, auch bedingt durch ihre vergleichsweise langsam
