About the Book

PAPERBACK of the PRELIMINARY EDITION of the detailed account of DAISY's Life experiences from birth in Vienna, her idillic childhood until the Anschluss and her flight to England, the wartime there and her postwar service in Germany, emigration to Canada and settlement in New York. A most exciting true story of an individual that went through thick and thin, supported only by her amazing courage. Over 400 pages, interspersed by more than 180 pictures, filled with glorious memories and frightening experiences. Edited and self-published by SASCHA ILLICH, her former husband and still best friend.
About the Author: DAISY CHARLOTTE ILLICH, the author, was born in Vienna, Austria in 1925 to a bourgeois, assimilated Jewish family. She grew up enjoying her childhood within the cultural life of the city as well as gaining an intimate experience of village life during summers on the family farm in Upper Austria. Forced to leave in 1938, they joined the English branch of the family in London. Boarding school in Shropshire alternated with vacations at home in London during the blitz. After graduation she worked in essential jobs for the war effort. Subsequently she served with USFET-CCD-G2, a civil censorship division of the U.S. War Department, preparing for the Nuremberg trials in Munich. Upon termination of this assignment, and due to the uncertainty and delay in obtaining her immigration visa to the U.S. since her application in 1938, she sailed to Montreal at Christmas 1948. At last, in April 1951 the visa was granted and she arrived in New York, ready to fulfill her dream of a normal life and a better future for the next generation. She married Sascha Illich, an architect, in 1956 and together they founded a new American family.
