About the Book

This book is my autobiography. My target readers are my family and my progeny. Over the years I have regretted not talking to my grandparents more about their lives and their parents and grandparents. I hope this book fills that void for my progeny. I have written it, too, for my friends and for my neighbors in Beaverdam who have often asked me about the history and events in Beaverdam that I have witnessed and heard from the "old folks" that I knew. An autobiography must pass through a very strong filter. It is an inherent part of the process. Winston Churchill has been quoted as saying, "History will be kind to me. I know because I intend to write it." The strongest filter I have applied is neglecting most of the interactions between myself and my family, my wife and children. I have left those parts out because they know them. Otherwise, I have strived to make the material interesting to read and coherent within the confines of a life. I have also sought to revel myself and depict my life journey from an isolated farm to some exotic career and international travel activities.
About the Author: The author, Charles Layne, was born and raised on a family farm in rural Hanover County, VA. After graduating from Beaver Dam High School in 1948 he attended Randolph-Macon College, a liberal arts institution in Ashland, VA., earning a degree in mathematics in 1952 He spent a career in high technology research and development in government laboratories and in private businesses. His work involved systems engineering and electro-optical technologies. Following an early retirement at fifty-five, he consulted for a few years before becoming a serious retiree. As a retiree he traveled to many lands to satisfy his travel lust. During his travels he met people in need and smart young people with an intense desire for college education but with no financial capability to pay tuition. Giving help to these people, he developed an active one on one charity operation in support of a refugee family in Liberia and young people in schools and colleges in the Philippines. In the book the author traces his life experiences from a rural family farm in Virginia through an exciting career in high technology work to a retirement activity of supporting a needy family in Liberia and young people in colleges in the Philippines.
