(Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung 2009). Wenn ein Diktator das Volk soweit manipuliert, dass dieses nahezu willenlos folgt, stellt sich die Frage nach dem Vorgehen. Mit perfiden Gedankenspielen zur Rassenlehre und Umdeutungen von Naturgesetzen versprach er den Bürgern, die vom Ausgang des Ersten Weltkrieges gezeichnet waren, eine höhere Lebensqualität, da sie zur überlegenen Rasse gehören. Die leicht verständlichen und darüber hinaus verheißungsvollen Botschaften boten der rechtsextremistischen Ideologie Vorschub, ihren Anhängern eine glorreiche Perspektive. In der Erzählung "Aus dem Leben eines Fauns" wird diese Thematik zwar indirekt angesprochen, die politischen Hintergründe bleiben jedoch weitestgehend unberücksichtigt. Beim erstmaligen Kontakt mit der Erzählung wirkt der Inhalt, begründet mit der atypischen Erzählstruktur und unzähligen intertextuellen Bezügen, suspekt. Und doch wird bei näherer Betrachtung die gesellschaftspolitische Kritik speziell an der Bevölkerung transparent. Innerhalb dieser Ausarbeitung werden zwei Systeme der Erzählung analysiert. Zum einen wird die Einstellung des Ich-Erzählers zur Gesellschaft im Allgemeinen begutachtet. Die Frage, welche Mitschuld jeder Einzelne an der Entwicklung hin zum Krieg trägt, soll dabei in den Fokus rücken (vgl. u. a. Simon 2006; Reemtsma 2004). Zum anderen wird die Familie des Protagonisten näher charakterisiert.
