Spesso la vita può prendere derive sconcertanti, non si è mai pronti quando ti chiede di sederti al tavolo e scoprire le tue carte, eppure lo fai, sicuro che la provvidenza al prossimo giro ti restituisca una scala reale, come risarcimento per tutto il dolore sopportato in precedenza.
E' quello che è successo a Oliver Clarke, americano del Kentucky, nato nei primi anni '80, secondogenito di una famiglia borghese proprietaria della Galaxy Toys, la più grande catena di giocattoli dello stato. Un nucleo fortemente compromesso dalla malattia mentale, che come una tenia ha consumato lentamente ogni componente. Partendo dal fratello maggiore Steven, un bambino gravemente instabile con inclinazioni omicide, fino ad arrivare ai genitori Leroy e Betty, anch'essi rapiti da una psicosi maniacale.
Il caso dei Clarke è di dominio pubblico, ne parlano i programmi di intrattenimento, soprattutto dopo il tentato familicidio ad opera di Steven.
Da qui riparte la vicenda di Oliver, adottato dai vicini di casa e cresciuto come un vero figlio biologico. Si laurea in giornalismo e ottiene un incarico in un quotidiano di Seattle; si occupa di cronaca nera, ma il desiderio di andare oltre, lo spinge a diventare un freelance totalmente indipendente dalle scalette di redazione e dagli orientamenti di testata.
La sua storia s'intrappola nell'ennesimo groviglio di eventi contrari, quando vende un'inchiesta che smaschera la corruzione del Seattle Police Department con le cosche mafiose di origine italiana, che in quegli anni dominano ogni tipo di affare illecito.
Si trova davanti all'impotenza, e alle innumerevoli speculazioni cerebrali che chiedono risposte urgenti.
Comincia un soliloquio con la parte più estrema del suo malessere, ne riconosce i meccanismi più infimi, ne viene risucchiato e rischia di morire per appassimento.
Nessuno avrebbe mai pensato, però, che la sorte di Oliver quell'estate a S. Paolo in Brasile, si intrecciasse con la rotta di alcuni colibrì mitologici, e con un fiore altrettanto raro scomparso ormai dalla foresta equatoriale.
Quel giorno il destino gli servì una scala reale, senza una parola di più.
