About the Book

Metaphysical contemplation is an art of living critically and daringly. This is an art which arises from a solitary experience of wandering and thinking. Flanerie is therefore the only ideal possible in a world where geographical distances are eliminated, and we are turned into tourists with no moral consciousness and love of the world. Solitary contemplation is the only refuge for an individual mind that wants to escape a world of flattery and conformism where authority is sanctified, and knowledge has become vulgar by ivy league privileges. As a matter of fact, there is no knowledge as hateful as pompous and vulgar knowledge. Yet, there cannot be any quest for knowledge and understanding without solitude. Solitude is the conditio sine qua non of flanerie. In other words, wherever and whenever critical mindedness fails us in judging reality truthfully, we should not replace it necessarily with technological novelty or tyranny of a crowd with a louder voice. On the contrary, we must try to take part in the interminable dialogue with our inner voice. Thus, flanerie is an act of distancing of the imbecility of crowds, while bridging the abyss with our moral conscience. It belongs to the flaneur to endow the encounter with life with meaning. This is not a question of chance, but that of excellence and nobility of spirit. Without excellence, wisdom is sterile. A person with no wisdom lives in a world of darkness. For a flaneur, civilization is not a trampoline of success, but a school of conversation with the ennobled knowledge of humanity. In a sea of ignorance, a noble spirit knows how to judge critically and act comprehensively. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ramin Jahanbegloo is an Iranian-Canadian political philosopher. He is presently the Executive Director of the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Nonviolence and Peace Studies and the Vice-Dean of the School of Law at Jindal Global University-Delhi-India.
