Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich VWL - Internationale Wirtschaftsbeziehungen, Note: 1, Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Veranstaltung: Seminar zur AVWL/ SVWL, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Ab der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde die Metropolisierung zu einem weltweiten Phänomen, vor allem in den Entwicklungsländern begannen die Bevölkerungszahlen der Städte zu explodieren. In den Industrieländern, hingegen wuchsen die Metropolen ab dieser Zeit eher langsam oder es kam sogar zu einer Bevölkerungsstagnation. Mit der rasant voranschreitenden Globalisierung wurde jedoch deutlich, dass die Bevölkerungszahl nicht der ausschlaggebende Faktor ist, der eine Stadt zu einer Weltmetropole macht. So entwickelte Mitte der 80er Jahre Friedmann seine "World City-Hypothese", nach der die Bedeutung von Städten vor allem nach dem Grad ihrer Integration in das weltwirtschaftliche System gemessen wird, wobei nicht das Produzieren von Gütern entscheidend ist, sondern die Kontrolle von Produktion und Märkten. Obwohl es keine allgemeingültigen und eindeutigen Indikatoren gibt nach denen dies gemessen werden kann, haben sich einige überzeugend und brauchbare Indikatoren herausgebildet, nach denen unterschieden wird zu welchem Rang eine Stadt gehört, so z.B.: - "Headquarter"-Funktion: Anzahl der Hauptsitze der weltweit größten Unternehmen und Banken in einer Stadt - Anzahl von "Advanced Producer Services" wie Werbe- und Consultingagenturen - Umsatzvolumen der internationalen Börsenplätze - Bedeutung der Stadt als Verkehrsknotenpunkt Die Suburbanisierung und der infolgedessen einsetzende relative Bedeutungsverlust des Stadtzentrums und der direkten Stadtbezirke im Verhältnis zum Suburbanen Raum führte mehr und mehr zu einem Zusammenwachsen von Stadt und Umland. Die Ausweitung der Transport- und Informationssysteme führte zu einer dichten Vernetzung von Region und Metropole. Aus dieser Verflechtung von Großstadt und Region, entwickelte sich schließlich der Begriff
