Seit dem legendaren Vorstoss des Feldherrn Ma Yuan in den aussersten Suden Chinas (43 n.Chr.) berichten chinesische Quellen uber die gefahrlichen "Miasmen" (chin. zhang) der Peripherie. Dieser schillernde Begriff konnte bis zum Ende des Kaiserreiches (1911) vieles signalisieren, die Einsamkeit am Ende der Zivilisation ebenso wie bestimmte Auffassungen von einer fremden Umgebung, vor allem aber weist er auf eine standige, sehr reale Bedrohung durch Krankheiten hin, unter denen die Malaria einen bedeutenden Platz einnahm und die der kontinuierlich fortschreitenden Expansion des Imperiums im Wege stand. Erhard Rosner untersucht in seiner Studie die Massnahmen, mit denen die chinesische Burokratie dieser Herausforderung in der Zivilverwaltung wie im Militar begegnete. Dabei wird der lange Zeitraum von der Song-Dynastie bis in die Periode des Niedergangs im 19. Jahrhundert betrachtet, im Mittelpunkt stehen die sudlichen und sudwestlichen Provinzen, vorrangig Guangdong, Guangxi und Yunnan. Es zeigt sich insgesamt eine koharente, vielerorts durchaus erfolgreiche Strategie von Einzelschritten zur Meidung wie auch der Anpassung, aus deren Realisierung wiederum Ruckschlusse auf die wechselnde Verbreitung der Malaria moglich sind. Daruber hinaus legen diese Anstrengungen auch grundlegende politische wie ideologische Perspektiven in der Wahrnehmung der Miasmen offen. Wahrend die immer wieder behauptete prinzipielle Unwirtlichkeit von Grenzregionen wie Nachbarlandern haufig als Argument fur eine Verzichtspolitik, die das "Gesicht" Chinas wahren sollte, dient, herrscht gleichzeitig ein weitgehend unerschutterlicher Optimismus vor, der in der Uberzeugung gipfelte, mit der dichteren Besiedlung wurden die Miasmen eines Tages ohnehin gleichsam von selbst verschwinden.
