About the Book

Dejstvie romana polnost'yu proiskhodit na territorii Rossijskoj imperii. Vostok Rossii ohvachen massovym vosstaniem turkestanskih plemen. Fel'd"eger' Mihail Strogov, otpravlen s vazhnejshim poslaniem k irkutskomu general-gubernatoru. Put' ego lezhit cherez zemli, zanyatye povstancami. Interesny paralleli mezhdu opisannym tatarskim nashestviem i hodom Vtoroj Mirovoj vojny na territorii Sovetskogo Soyuza: v techenie teplogo (letnego) vremeni zahvatchiki bystro pokoryayut bol'shie territorii, odnako zatem nastupaet zhestokaya zima, vo vremya kotoroj oni teryayut vse zavoevannoe i nesut tyazhelye poteri. V ehtom sluchae osada Irkutska, kotoryj udalos' otstoyat', podobna osade Stalingrada, kotoryj stal povorotnoj tochkoj v vojne. Krome togo, opisana praktika formirovaniya iz politicheskih protivnikov batal'onov smerti, kotorye, takzhe kak v romane, ispol'zovalas' vo vremya vojny s Germaniej. Pervonachal'no roman nosil nazvanie Kur'er carya (ili Carskij kur'er), rabota nad nim ZHul' Vern nachal v 1875 godu. CHast' raboty nad romanom pisatel' prodelal v plavuchem kabinete na bortu yahty Sen-Mishel'. Zamysel romana naveyan geopoliticheskimi sobytiyami: v konce 60-h - nachale 70-h godov XIX veka Rossiya pokorila ryad zemel' v Srednej Azii, v tom chisle Kokandskoe, Buharskoe i Hivinskoe hanstva. V 1875 godu sostoyalis' lokal'nye vooruzhennye vystupleniya nedovol'nyh mestnyh zhitelej. K 1876 godu protesty byli polnost'yu podavleny. EHti vystupleniya ZHyul' Vern v romane razvernul v shirokomasshtabnoe narodnoe vosstanie i opisal ego hod. Nuzhno otmetit', chto ZHyul' Vern postaralsya sobrat' vse dostupnye emu opisaniya Sibiri i naselyayushchih ee narodov (sdelannye kak russkimi, tak i evropejcami) - i nazvannye avtorom goroda, reki, sela i dazhe samye malye mestechki geograficheski dany sovershenno verno. V romane avtor opisyvaet mestorozhdeniya nefti v rajone ozera Bajkal: oni dejstvitel'no byli otkryty v 1902 godu. Izdatel' EHtcel', oznakomivshis' s pervymi glavami romana, vyskazal opasenie po povodu vvoda v roman carskogo kur'era, v tot samyj moment, kogda francuzsko-russkoe sblizhenie stalo pervejshej zabotoj nashih diplomatov. Po pros'be EHtcelya (i rekomendacii samogo Verna), s tekstom rukopisi oznakomilsya I.S. Turgenev, zhivshij vo Francii. On vnimatel'no prochel rukopis' i sdelal mnozhestvo zamechanij, prinyatyh avtorom s blagodarnost'yu. V celom Turgenev roman odobril, odnako predpolozhil principial'nuyu nevozmozhnost' v sovremennoe vremya tatarskogo nashestviya v Rossii. Pered nachalom publikacii romana izdatel' cherez Turgeneva svyazalsya s russkim poslom v Parizhe grafom Orlovym, i poprosil ego prochest' korrekturnye listy Kur'era carya. Posol ne nashel v romane nichego predosuditel'nogo, no porekomendoval izmenit' zaglavie romana (po drugim istochnikam, smenit' zaglavie potreboval u avtora sam EHtcel'). Krome togo, EHtcel' potreboval isklyuchit' iz teksta vse, chto moglo byt' pripisano pravivshemu togda Aleksandru II ili ego otcu Nikolayu I. ZHyul' Vern soglasilsya s trebovaniyami izdatelya. Pered nachalom romana poyavilos' obrashchenie ot avtora, v kotorom on preduprezhdal, chto v romane rech' pojdet o vymyshlennyh sobytiyah. Kiseleva, predstavlennyj v nastoyashchem izdanii romana. Posle ehtogo roman ne izdavalsya mnogo let.
