Die Ballets Russes gelten heute als das wegweisende Ballettereignis des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts. Ab dem Jahr 1909 bis zu seinem Tod 1929 stellte der Impresario Sergej Djagilev in Paris und anderen Stadten Europas sowie in Nord- und Sudamerika russische Tanzerinnen und Tanzer in Balletten vor, bei denen Choreografie, Musik und Buhnenbild kunstlerisch gleichwertig nebeneinander stehen sollten. Michail Fokin war dabei der erste einer Reihe von Choreografen, die fur die Ballets Russes arbeiteten; sein Stil sollte das Ballett des 20. Jahrhunderts massgeblich beeinflussen. Eines der ersten Werke, mit denen die Ballets Russes im Jahr 1909 ihren internationalen Siegeszug antraten, war das Ballett Cleopatre mit Musik von Anton Arenskij, Sergej Taneev, Nikolaj Rimskij-Korsakov, Michail Glinka, Aleksandr Glazunov und Modest Musorgskij. Das Buhnenbild und die Kostume schuf kein geringerer als der Kunstler Leon Bakst, Freund und kunstlerischer Mitarbeiter Sergej Djagilevs. Erstmals liegt mit diesem Band eine ausfuhrliche Studie zu Michail Fokins Ballett Cleopatre vor. Das Werk, das sich in dieser Studie als wichtiges Scharnier zwischen traditioneller und avantgardistischer Ballettasthetik erweist, war bisher in seinem genauen Aussehen ungeklart. Constanze Muller hat nun alle noch auffindbaren Teile u.a. anhand von Noten, Fotos und Erinnerungen Beteiligter zu einem aufschlussreichen Bild zusammengefugt. Dabei verortet sie das Werk ebenso in seinem faszinierend vieldimensionalen Entstehungskontext: Russland in ballettasthetischer Erstarrung und gesellschaftlichen Umbruchen an der Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert sowie Paris im Orientalismusrausch und schillernden Fin de Siecle.
