About the Book

Where medical care is not available, women too often die in childbirth. This story is about a young girl in rural Mexico whose older sister dies giving birth, along with her baby. To overcome her grief, she determines to become a midwife in order to prevent others in her community from suffering such a terrible loss. The story is bilingual, written in English and Spanish, to help young readers learn the other language. The beautiful illustrations by Alma Lucero Martínez Salazar, a student studying Communications and Graphic Design at the prestigious Instituto Tecnologico Sanmiguelense de Estudios Superiores in San Miguel, makes the story come to life and helps in understanding the words in another language. The story unfolds about the relationship of Juanita and her older sister, Angela. Angela gets married and shares that she has become pregnant. The whole family is excited about the impending birth, everyone contributing to the new little one to come. Once labor starts, things get difficult and no resources are available to help Angela. Finally, the doctor from the closest town is brought by horse, but it is too late. Juanita's mother helps her crying daughter, showing her a star in the sky that is now her sister, with the little star nearby that is the baby. Juanita feels her sister's presence. Angela tells her to not let other women suffer like she has. Juanita works very hard to become a midwife, her sister guiding her from her place in the stars as she helps women give birth. About the Author: LeoNora M. Cohen is emeritus professor of education at Oregon State University. Her research focused on creativity, talent development, coping, and children's interests. At university, Nora was a Latin American Studies major, conducting research in Cali Colombia that greatly helped her Spanish fluency and led her to become a teacher and educator. But what she really loves is writing children's books! Maybe it is because she now has two adorable little grand children. In retirement, Nora spends winters in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. There, she volunteers with several non-profit organizations that help children and the greater community. To benefit these organizations, she writes bilingual children's books in English and Spanish. All book royalties are donated to these NGOs. She is currently working on her 26th book. Nora invites high school students to illustrate her stories, paying them well for their efforts. She loves mentoring them to grow into professional-level illustrators who create images of the characters and actions that help children understand the story's meaning in both languages.
