Antonio Zaglul se zambulló en las procelosas aguas de la dominicanidad y escribió un libro sospechoso, Mis 500 locos, en el que cada lector estaba involucrado, puesto que con solo iniciar la lectura los 500 locos pasaban a ser 501, incluyendo a quien en ese momento leía. ¿Cuál es el género verdadero de este libro tan exitoso en nuestro país? Yo creo que durante muchos años hemos leído este libro sin profundizar adecuadamente en su estructura narrativa. Mis 500 locos es la narración alucinada de una estación de la vida de este país, en la que la razón como instrumental se quiebra, y sobreviene el absurdo de una situación en la que la Nación toda es un gigantesco manicomio. Antonio Zaglul escribió el libro Mis 500 locos como la más hermosa novela de la libertad de este pueblo, para restituirle la historia robada durante más de treinta años de tiranía.
About the Author: Antonio Zaglul. Médi--co Psiquiatra con es--------pecialidad en Es--------paña. Nació en San Pedro de Macorís el 2 de abril de 1920 de padres libaneses. En los años finales de la década del cincuenta dirigió el hospital psiquiátrico Padre Billini, entonces localizado en Nigua y escenario de lo aquí narrado. En su administración ese hospital se trasladó al kilómetro 28 de la carretera Duarte donde todavía hoy está localizado. En el año 1960 se fue a vi------vir a Puerto Rico y allí continuó ejerciendo la psiquiatría. Al retornar al país se dedicó a la práctica privada y a la enseñanza en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo llegando a ser Profesor Meritísimo. En 1966 publicó, con el sugestivo tí---tulo de Mis 500 locos, un li---bro con sus Memorias como director del hospital psiquiátrico Padre Billini. Desde entonces este libro, que ha sido leído con avidez, forma parte de la literatura clásica dominicana. Zaglul ha sido un escritor prolífero no solo de libros sino de artículos de prensa que están diseminados en los periódicos más importantes del país. En el año 1985 se inició en el mundo diplomático al ser nombrado embajador en España y luego en la Santa Sede. Murió el 3 de junio de 1996 en la ciudad de Santo Domingo tras combatir un cáncer de estómago por más de veinte años.
