About the Book

El primer relato autobiográfico de la condesa de Merlin se publicó en francés en 1831. Más tarde lo tradujo al español Agustín de Palma, en 1838. En Mis doce primeros años relata, con tono nostálgico, su infancia, su reclusión en un convento habanero, sus intentos de fuga del mismo entre otras diversas peripecias adolescentes.

También encontramos descripciones de la vida colonial entre los horrores de la esclavitud y la ociosidad de la clase pudiente.

Estas memorias son asimismo un libro de viajes a través del Atlántico, Cádiz, Sevilla, Aranjuez y Madrid. Ciudad en la que la condesa de Merlin vivió rodeada de las figuras más relevantes de la España de entonces. Así se aprecia en este pasaje de Mis doce primeros años:


Una noche era muy numerosa la reunión. Se acababan de formar las partidas de juego. El tresillo y los dados tocaron a los jugadores serios. El bullicioso chaquete se había enviado a la pieza inmediata, según costumbre. Diversos grupos acá y allá, se entretenían alternativamente de política, de literatura, o de aquellas bagatelas que ponen muchas veces en el mismo nivel a un hombre de talento y a un tonto. Mi hermana y yo estábamos colocadas junto a una mesa ocupadas con algunas amigas en hacer varios juegos de paciencia, en mirar caricaturas y aun tal vez en hacerlas. Todo era movimiento y placer en derredor nuestro. La alegría, los chistes que salían de nuestra mesa, atraían como un imán a unos, y a otros para donde estábamos. Repentinamente se anunció la llegada de Goya, y salió una exclamación de nuestra mesa. Aquel pintor ingenioso, añadía a su raro talento, la gracia de hacer excelentes caricaturas; y nuestra mesa era comúnmente el teatro donde se ejercitaba su malignidad. Mi madre se aprovechaba de sus visitas para enseñarle nuestros trabajos, y aquel día le esperábamos con impaciencia para mostrarle dos dibujos que habíamos concluido; el uno era una cabeza de Santa Teresa, y el otro una Magdalena. A una de nuestras amigas le ocurrió confundirlos para que los juzgase con imparcialidad; aplaudimos esta idea, y pasados los primeros cumplimientos, se expusieron nuestras obras sobre la mesa. Advertido Goya secretamente por nuestra amiga Nieves, los examinó y dejó acercar los curiosos. V... que se preciaba de inteligente, fue uno de los primeros.


María de las Mercedes Santa Cruz y Montalvo Cárdenas y O'Farrill nació en La Habana, en 1789, y murió en París, en 1852. Fue autora de una obra variada y rica, escrita en francés. Sin embargo, llegó rápidamente a la notoriedad. La casi totalidad de su obra se tradujo al español y se hizo célebre en Cuba y España.
