El presente volumen de mitos mesopotámicos se divide en tres secciones. La primera de ellas contiene mitos sobre la creación, el más extendido de los cuales es el Enuma Elish, o el relato babilónico de la creación. En este mito, el dios Marduk se enfrenta en batalla contra la dragona Tiamat y crea el mundo a partir del cuerpo de esta y del de su segundo al mando. La historia de Atrahasis no tiene que ver con la creación, sino con la re-creación, ya que se trata del mito de la Gran Inundación enviada por los dioses para arrasar con todo. El buen Atrahasis se salva gracias a la intervención del dios Enki, que avisa a Atrahasis y le manda construir el arca que le salvará a él, a su familia y a los animales. La historia de Etana tiene una naturaleza menos cósmica que las dos anteriores, ya que el acto de la creación que se narra en este relato es el intento de Etana de tener un hijo, y por lo tanto, un heredero al trono.

Las hazañas y debilidades de los dioses mesopotámicos aparecen reflejadas en la segunda sección, en historias que nos hablan del carácter de cada una de estas divinidades y que contienen temas que nos aportan datos sobre los conceptos mesopotámicos acerca del orden cósmico. En la primera historia, la diosa Ishtar decide visitar el Inframundo, donde la diosa Ereshkigal ejerce su dominio. Cuando Ereshkigal se preocupa porque la diosa Ishtar pueda suplantarla, prepara una trampa para mantener a Ishtar presa hasta que es rescatada. El acto de Ereshkigal tiene implicaciones cósmicas, ya que Ishtar es una diosa de la fertilidad y, por lo tanto, su confinamiento implica que se suspende toda procreación en la Tierra.

Ereshkigal también es una figura destacada en la siguiente historia, la cual relata cómo Nergal, dios de la guerra y la pestilencia, llega a ser su consorte. Nergal rechaza con éxito todos los halagos que Ereshkigal le brinda, excepto la tentación de su cuerpo. Una vez ha satisfecho su deseo, Nergal debe hacer del Inframundo su morada y permanecer allí como amante de Ereshkigal, o de lo contrario, Ereshkigal trastocará el orden natural de las cosas enviando a los muertos de vuelta a la Tierra para comerse a los vivos.

El orden divino y el orden natural son temas que también aparecen en los dos últimos relatos de esta sección. En el primero, el dios-héroe Ninurta lleva a cabo su trabajo de restauración del orden divino cuando derrota al ave Anzu, la cual ha robado las Tablillas del Destino de Enlil, mientras que el mito de Adapa sirve como una historia sobre el origen de las cosas para explicar por qué los humanos no son inmortales.
