Nun lebt er allein in einem Hotel im New Yorker Stadtteil Hell's Kitchen und ernährt sich von Bourbon und Kaffee in der Kneipe von Jimmy Armstrong um die Ecke. Das Geld, das er zum Leben braucht, verdient er sich als Privatdetektiv ohne Lizenz, indem er, wie er es ausdrückt, »Freunden Gefälligkeiten erweist«.

»Zum ersten Mal in der nun aus drei Büchern bestehenden Matt-Scudder-Reihe erhebt das Wort >Alkoholiker Aber zwischen Matts regelmäßigem Kippen von Drinks bekommen wir einen spannenden kleinen Fall präsentiert: Diesmal ist sein Klient ein korrupter Cop, der zu gierig wird und den Mord an einer Prostituierten in die Schuhe geschoben bekommt.
