Das Ziel ist nicht mehr nur die Entwicklung funktionierender und zuverlässig arbeitender Systeme, sondern immer häufiger auch die Implementierung einer raschen und verlässlichen Fehlererkennung und Auswertung. Nur dadurch ist gewährleistet mögliche Verluste im Fehlerfall - durch zu langen Funktionsausfall oder etwaige Folgeschäden - gering zu halten. Als Beispiel genügt bereits ein kurzer Blick auf die Veränderungen in der Kraftfahrzeugtechnik. Immer komplexere Aggregate und Fahrzeugsysteme erfordern eine genauso komplexe Überwachung. Beschränken sich in älteren Fahrzeugen Warnsysteme meist nur auf Öltemperatur und -druck, so finden sich bei modernen Kraftfahrzeugen eine Vielzahl von Warn- und Fehleranzeigen. Aufgetretene Fehler werden gar zusammen mit verschiedenen Parametern wie Geschwindigkeit und Drehzahl in einem Fehlerspeicher abgelegt und können zur Analyse mit Computern (Bild 1.1) ausgelesen werden. Bei schwerwiegenden Fehlern im Fahrbetrieb aktiviert eine Steuereinheit ein so genanntes Notlaufprogramm und schützt den Motor so vor Beschädigung. Solche Systeme können weit abgelegen sein und von einer Zentralen Schaltwarte kontrolliert und gesteuert werden. Im Fehle rfall ist hier ein schnelles Eingreifen - gegebenenfalls über Fernleittechnik - entscheidend, um größere Schäden zu verhindern.
