Spermatogenesis involves the coordination of a number of signaling pathways, which culminate into production of sperm. Its failure results in male factor infertility, which can be due to hormonal, environmental, genetic or other unknown factors. This book includes chapters on most of the signaling pathways known to contribute to spermatogenesis. Latest research in germ cell signaling like the role of small RNAs in spermatogenesis is also discussed. This book aims to serve as a reference for both clinicians and researchers, explaining possible causes of infertility and exploring various treatment methods for management through the basic understanding of the role of molecular signaling.
Key Features
- Discusses the signaling pathways that contribute to successful
spermatogenesis
- Covers comprehensive information about Spermatogenesis at
one place
- Explores the vital aspects of male fertility and infertility
- Explains the epigenetic regulation of germ cell development
and fertility
- Highlights the translational opportunities in molecular signaling

About the Author: Dr Rajender Singh, PhD, is a Principal Scientist at the CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow. He received Bachelor of Sciences from Kurukshetra University in the field of medical sciences. During Master of Sciences course in Biotechnology from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, he received fellowship from the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. He received research fellowship from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to pursue Ph.D. in reproductive genetics from the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad. Immediately upon completion of Ph.D., Dr. Singh joined the CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow as a scientist.
His research interests include understanding of the causes of and developing modalities for the treatment of male infertility. His recent research work has identified DNA methylation based markers that can differentiate fertile sperm from infertile sperm. This would help in sperm selection in infertility clinics and also explain the etiology of infertility in a number of couples that remain idiopathic at this moment. After exhaustive work on genetics of infertility, he has come up with an infertility genetic diagnostic kit, which will assist in the treatment of infertility in IVF clinics and in the assessment of infertility risk early in life. He has also identified a number of miRNAs and mRNAs in sperm that show strong linkage with infertility.
Dr. Singh has published more than 100 research articles and 19 book chapters. He is on the editorial board of Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology, Andrologia, World Journal of Meta-analysis, Research Reports and Polymorphism. His work has been recognized by a number of prestigious scientific bodies in the form of Haryana Yuva Vigyan Ratna Award (2018), INDO US Post-doctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2017), the Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award from D.Bt (2015), Young Scientist Award from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (2014), Young Scientist Award from the Indian Science Congress Association (2012), the Young Scientist Award from the Indian National Scientific Academy (2011) and the Young Scientist Award from the Indian Society of Human Genetics (2006).
