Die Computersimulationen haben sich seit ihrer Einführung stürmisch entwickelt und wurden vielfältig angewendet. In der Literatur findet man neben zahlreichen Originalarbeiten auch eine Reihe zusammenfassender Darstellungen. Dieses Buch wendet sich an Studierende und Wis- senschaftler der Physik und Chemie sowie benachbarter Disziplinen, die ihre Arbeitmethoden um dieses wirkungsvolle Werkzeug erweitern wollen. Das Buch gibt eine Einführung in dieses Gebiet und soll eine Lücke im deutschsprachigen Raum schließen helfen. Die Computersimulationen geben detaillierte Einblicke ins molekulare Geschehen und spielen eine Doppelrolle insofern, als sie durch numerische Berechnungen physikalischer Modelle einer- seits zur Ergänzung und Überprüfung der analytischen Theorie dienen und andererseits durch die Möglichkeiten der Variation von Systemeigenschaften den Bereich der Experimente zu erweitern helfen. Im vorliegenden Buch werden zuerst die Grundlagen für die Computersimulationen skizziert. Das ist insbesondere die Statistische Physik (Kapitel 2), die die Behandlung von Vielteilchensy- stemen ermöglicht, und zwar durch die Berechnung statistischer Größen wie Zustandssummen, Paarverteilungs-und Korrelationsfunktionen. Sie dienen als Ausgangspunkt zur Berechnung der strukturellen, thermodynamischen und Transport-Daten. Als ein entscheidener Schritt zum Erhalten adäquater Resultate gilt die sinnvolle Wahl der inter-und intramolekularen Wechselwirkungspotentiale, die im Kapitel 3 behandelt wird. Im Hauptteil des Buches wird die Methode der Molekulardynamik (Kapitel 4, 5, 7) erläutert, die die Bewegung der betrachteten Systeme durch Lösung mechanischer Bewegungsgleichungen und Berechnung der gewünschten strukturellen, thermodynamischen und Transport-Daten durch Auswertung geeigneter Mittelwerte beschreibt. Vergleichsweise zur Molekulardynamik wird im Kapitel 8 von Herrn H.-L. Vörtler ein kurzer Abriß des Monte-Carlo-Verfahrens - der zweiten wichtigen Methode der Computersimulation- gegeben.
