About the Book

This story moves through adventure, tragedy, joy, and humor as it weaves together the lives of three people who have survived the many challenges in their lives. Gerald Powell is a career Coast Guard officer who has experienced deep sea rescues, drug raids, and the Vietnam War. Coral Lee Bascom, beginning in her church choir in rural Tennessee and rising to national stardom, struggles though the ups and downs of the music industry and the loss of her beloved husband and singing partner. Bette Canales is a TexMex school teacher whose family suffered though the difficulties of two separate border crossings, migrant work farms, and the devastating explosion in Texas City, Texas that destroyed much of the city in 1947. Caught in an unhappy marriage, she looks for a way out, and finds it.
About the Author: (Glenn) Allen Mitchell was 71 when he wrote this story in 2001. It arose from a vivid dream of a daring rescue at sea and a life-long love story, which he began to write down when he woke up. It grew as he tried to recreate the situations and the characters. As he worked backward to create their varied milieus, a novel took shape. He was surprised. He drew on his own knowledge of country music to flesh out Cora Lee Bascom, and he wrote her original songs. His war experiences in Korean gave him fuel for the chapter on Vietnam. The post-Korean G.I. bill allowed him to finish high school and go on for bachelor and master degrees in geography, which he put to good use in his Texas locations (his master's thesis in 1959 was on Corpus Christi). He gave up teaching for the hippy world when he moved to Berkley, California, where he lived for more than 20 years. His early days were spent on the streets, which led him to become a volunteer at the Berkley Free Clinic. This was raw material for his later chapters. In l995 he found his way back to the Texican world of Corpus Christi, where he researched the deadly Galveston hurricane of 1900 and the horrific Texas City explosion of 1947. The characters of Gerald Powell and his Mexican wife Bette were the most challenging, since they were far from his own life experiences. (He chose Bette's family name, Canales, to honor Gloria Canales, who died at the age of eight while Allen was volunteering at Driscoll Children's Hospital.) Allen studied the Coast Guard and its activities over a fifty-year span, the waves of Mexican migrations from the 1920s through the 1940s, and two major Texas disasters. "I learned a lot!" he commented. Allen lives in a small trailer with cats Pericles, Pandora. Now in his 80s, he's still an avid sail-boarder. "And I can run a block with no problem," he claims. "more if I need to." He also continues to volunteer at the children's hospital, and has worked as a substitute teacher in Corpus Christi schools, which inspired Bette's "Mrs. Baghead" in the novel.
