Der Junge Morac leidet unter dem Verlust seines Vaters, den er früh verloren hat. Er weiß von ihm nur, dass er im Kampf mit einem Drachen gefallen ist, nachdem er das Ungeheuer mit seinem Speer verwundet hat. Als ihm der Drache im Traum erscheint, bricht Morac allein auf, um mit ihm abzurechnen. Unterwegs gewinnt er zwei Gefährten, einen Vogel und einen Wolf, die er aus der Gefangenschaft befreit. Schließlich erreicht er sein Ziel, wo er erfährt, dass ihm eine ganz andere Rolle zugedacht ist, als er bisher geglaubt hat. Im zweiten Teil des Romans steigt Morac, inzwischen verheiratet und Familienvater, zum Vorsteher seines Volkes auf. Doch die Zeiten sind unruhig: Rivalisierende Gruppen innerhalb der Gemeinde kämpfen um Einfluss, und die Raubzüge der Bergbewohner am Rande der Siedlung nehmen zu. Als in dieser aufgeheizten Atmosphäre Moracs Tochter verschwindet, kommt es zum offenen Krieg mit den Bergleuten. Dabei begegnet er seinem Gegenspieler, ihrem Oberhaupt, von dem er erfährt, dass das gleiche Schicksal sie verbindet. Gemeinsam begeben sich die beiden Erzfeinde auf die Suche nach ihren verschwundenen Kindern. Im letzten Teil des Romans will Morac, inzwischen wieder Privatmann, sich zur Ruhe setzen. Aber als er zufällig an einem Sklavenmarkt vorbeigeht, greift er spontan ein, um eine verängstigte junge Frau vor einem schlimmen Schicksal zu bewahren. Er nimmt sie zu sich, aber da sie weder spricht noch seine Sprache versteht, ist der Umgang mit ihr sehr mühsam. Mit Hilfe seiner Schwägerin und seines Sohnes gelingt es ihm nach und nach, das Vertrauen des fremden Mädchens zu gewinnen. Doch dann droht neues Unheil: Aus der Ferne rückt eine fremde Macht heran, die alles, was sie vorfindet, dem Erdboden gleichmacht. Morac überlegt verzweifelt, wie er seine Magd in Sicherheit bringen kann, nicht ahnend, dass sie ein alles entscheidendes Geheimnis hütet.
About the Author: Paul M. Whiting wurde 1950 in der Nähe von Boston (USA) geboren. Nach dem Studium der Germanistik übersiedelte Whiting 1979 nach Deutschland, das er zu seiner Heimat gemacht hat. Nach Beendigung seiner Lehrtätigkeit am Gymnasium arbeitet Whiting weiterhin als freiberuflicher Autor für einen großen deutschen Bildungsverlag. Sein Debütroman 'Morac' erschien 2017 bei Tredition.
