Este libro analiza las formas de sentir y experimentar la muerte en el contexto de la sociedad rioplatense tardo-colonial y post-revolucionaria, así como las transformaciones en las actitudes y sensibilidades religiosas a lo largo de ese período transicional.
¿Qué representaba la muerte para un porteño de fines del siglo XVIII? ¿De qué forma
se la percibía y se la experimentaba? ¿Cómo se preparaba el moribundo ante su inminente llegada? ¿Cómo reaccionaban los parientes y amigos del difunto? ¿Cuáles eran los nexos que unían al mundo terrenal con el más allá, a los vivos con los muertos?
De este modo se explora de qué modo la muerte se infiltra en la experiencia cotidiana de los hombres y mujeres del período colonial y cómo la conciencia y la presencia de la muerte -magnificada por la pastoral barroca- condiciona sus comportamientos y su moral. Se acompaña el trayecto del enfermo y del moribundo hasta la tumba y más allá, dando cuenta del universo simbólico y del sistema de creencias dentro del cual se insertan sus actitudes y comportamientos, así como los de la comunidad en su conjunto. La indagación sobre los espacios y los ritos funerarios permite recuperar esa experiencia íntima e individual, pero atendiendo también a los condicionamientos propios de una sociedad profundamente jerárquica y desigual.

Facundo Roca es Profesor y Doctor en Historia por la Universidad Nacional de la Plata. Sus investigaciones se centran en las formas de religiosidad, las prácticas devocionales y las actitudes ante la muerte en el Río de la Plata tardo-colonial. Es becario post-doctoral de CONICET, con lugar de trabajo en el Instituto de Investigaciones en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales (IdIHCS) de la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad Nacional
de la Plata, y como Profesor Adjunto en la cátedra de Historia Económica y Social II de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas de esa misma casa de estudios. Es miembro del Grupo de Estudios de Historia de la Iglesia (RELIGIO) del Instituto de Historia Argentina y Americana
"Dr. Emilio Ravignani" (UBA) y del Programa Interinstitucional El Mundo Atlántico en la
Modernidad Temprana (FaHCE-UNLP).
