Encajada la señora dentro de su butaca de gutapercha, en el rincón de la ventana, mientras crece y mengua su labor de calceta sin mirarla una sola vez, sigue los pasos al adorado chiquillo, y en cierto modo, salvando la distancia de la calle y calando el espesor de las paredes, le acompaña hasta el aula misma. Le ve entrar; al salir observa si se detiene en algún grupo, y con quién charla, y cómo se ríe; conoce a todos los camaradas, a los amigotes, a los antipáticos, a los estudiosos, a los holgazanes, a los asiduos, a los que hacen rabona casi siempre. También está familiarizada con las caras de los profesores, y estudia su continente y su modo de responder al saludo de los discípulos, sacando de los signos exteriores importantes consecuencias psicológicas, relacionadas con el problema de los exámenes. - ¡Ay! Allí viene ya el viejiño Contreras, el de Procedimientos. ¡Qué afable!... ¡Qué cara de santo! Anda despacito el pobre... bien se nota que padece reuma articular, como yo. ¡Malpecado! Me es simpático por eso. No, y sobre todo, porque sé que es blando y que le ha de dar a Rogelio un aprobado como una casa. Ahora sale Ruiz del Monte, tan almidonado y tan engreído. Parece todo él hecho de una pieza. ¡Pobres de nos! Con éste no valen empeños, ni influencias, ni... Arre que le han de saber los chicos la asignatura tan bien como él. Pues para eso, que les deje a ellos la catedra... y la paga. ¡Ay! Ahí tenemos al señor de Lastra. Jorobadito es un poco. ¡Qué gracia, las caricaturas que los muchachos le sacan en clase! Y se pasa de campechano. Ahí está pegándole palmadas en el hombro a Benito Díaz, el amigacho de Rogelio
