Ellis beschreibt hier eine Beobachtung, die vollkommen logisch erscheint: Der Mensch kann sich in eben jenen Situationen am besten ausdrücken, in denen er sich tagtäglich aufhält: Ein Schiffskapitän bewegt sich also in der nautischen Sprache ebenso sicher wie ein Strategy Consultant im obligatorischen Business English, weil jeder von ihnen sein erworbenes Vokabelwissen, seinen fachterminologischen Korpus sozusagen, ständig aktiv anwendet und seine fluency trainiert. Nachgewiesenermaßen lernt der Mensch immer leichter und schneller das, was ihn interessiert und was er für seinen Alltag unabdingbar braucht. So ist es selbstverständlich, dass man sich bewusst und enthusiastisch gleichzeitig mit dem angestrebten Berufsweg auch die entsprechenden Voraussetzungen für die Ausübung derselben Tätigkeit aneignet. Doch wie ist das bei Kindern und Jugendlichen, die zunächst einmal keine Wahl haben, ob sie die im Curriculum vorgesehenen Schulfächer, wie auch Englisch als erste, zweite oder dritte Fremdsprache, lernen wollen oder nicht? Hier ist nun die Rede von Schülern im Alter zwischen 9 und 17 Jahren, die selbst meist noch gar nicht wissen, ob und wie sie sich für neue Fächer begeistern sollen, da sie ja bis zu ihrer ersten Englisch-Stunde kaum Zeit hatten, überhaupt Interesse zu entwickeln.
