Chr. floh Harpalos, der makedonische Verwalter der Kriegskasse Alexanders des Großen von Babylon, mit einer ungeheuren Menge veruntreuter Geldmittel und einer riesigen Flotte zusammen mit seinen Söldnern nach Attika, um in Athen Schutz vor dem Makedonenkönig zu suchen. Obwohl Harpalos das athenische Bürgerrecht besaß, verweigerten ihm die Athener, auf Antrag des Demosthenes, die Aufnahme in die Stadt, da sie die Rache Alexanders fürchteten. Bevor Demosthenes von den diplomatischen Verhandlungen in Olympia mit Nikanor, in Stellvertretung für Alexander, aufbrach, wurde Harpalos auf Antrag des Demosthenes doch in die Stadt aufgenommen, jedoch in Haft gesteckt. Sein Vermögen wurde auf der Akropolis deponiert. Nach kurzer Zeit wurde diesem aber die Flucht aus der Haft ermöglicht und man stellte fest, dass ein Großteil der Schätze fehlte. Da es sich um einen der größten politischen Korruptionsskandale der Antike handelte, gilt es mit dieser Arbeit zu klären, welche Motive neben den finanziellen Beweggründen Demosthenes dazu bewegten, sich für Harpalos einzusetzen, obwohl er wusste, dass eine Aufnahme in die Stadt Athen eine Provokation Alexanders mit sich bringen würde. Verfolgte Demosthenes im Zuge der Harpalos-Affäre vielleicht höhere Ziele? In der bisherigen Forschung wurde in der Vergangenheit immer der Frage nachgegangen, ob Demosthenes sich der Korruption schuldig gemacht hat oder nicht. Jedoch geht man in der neueren Forschung vielmehr auf den Wandel der Außenpolitik Athens nach Chaironeia und die politische Kompromissfindung seitens Athen ein. Wolfgang Will gibt hier eine umfassende Analyse der Verhältnisse nach 338 v. Chr.. Zudem wurde seit dem 19. Jhd. Demosthenes als zentrale Person des 4. Jhd. v. Chr. gesehen, doch mit Beginn der 1990 Jahre trat die Person Alexander des Große
