Ich nutze diese Tatsache aus, um Angst zu machen. In Wirklichkeit weiß man nicht genau, wovor man Angst hat." Diese Aussage traf der französische Schriftsteller Michel Houellebecq in einem Interview mit Silvain Bourmeau über seinen aktuellsten Roman "Unterwerfung" in der Zeitung "Die Welt". Er beschreibt in dem Buch die Machtübernahme einer islamischen Partei im Frankreich des Jahres 2022. Der Autor bezeichnet sein Werk selbst als politische Fiktion mit der er durch die Dramatisierung der Ereignisse eine Angst vor den Entwicklungen in Frankreich schüren will. Durch den Roman wurden heftige Reaktionen verschiedener Art ausgelöst. Aufgrund der Aussage des Autors und den auf das Buch entstanden Reaktionen lässt sich schließen, dass die Thematik des Buches einen empfindsamen Nerv getroffen hat, was die Frage aufwirft, was der Autor mit dem Buch bezwecken will. Um sich dieser Frage teilweise zu nähern, soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit darauf eingegangen werden, ob Houellebecq mit Unterwerfung eine Dystopie geschrieben hat, die vor den in ihr beschrieben Entwicklungen warnt. Allein der Titel erweckt den Anschein. Die Vielzahl der in den letzten Jahren erschienenen literarischen Dystopien lassen darauf schließen, dass es sich dabei um ein Genre mit Aktualität handelt. Dieses Genre zeichnet sich auf verschiedene Art und Weise auf, und lässt sich dennoch immer auf einen gemeinsamen Nenner bringen. Die Fragestellung, mit der sich die folgende Arbeit beschäftigt, lautet, ob "Unterwerfung" die Motive einer Dystopie aufzeigt, wie sie sich in prototypischen Werken des Genres bei Huxley und Orwell finden lassen.
