About the Book

Life is simple, family is important and good morals are still taught in these mountains and valleys. This book is an accurate depiction of life in rural Appalachia in the 1950s and, in some parts of the mountains, is still true today. This book is an ideal way for grandparents to relate life as it was when they were young to their grandchildren and to develop a connection between the past and the present.
About the Author: Linda Allport Holliday's earliest jobs were as a baby-sitter for neighborhood children. She was only a teen herself, but this activity was the seed of the desire to help young people grow to maturity. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Language Arts, a Master's degree in Special Education, and more than 50 graduate hours beyond the Master's degree with special emphasis on writing. Her basic teaching field of English, speech, and journalism was expanded with certification to teach Advanced Placement courses in Composition and Reading and Composition and Writing Analysis. In addition to 34 years' experience teaching grades 7-12, she also taught college freshman English classes for two local colleges and supervised student teachers. She also gave special attention to students' writing skills from throughout West Virginia as she worked with the standards committee of the WV Writing Assessment from its inception in 1985. As a secondary language arts teacher in Fayette County, WV, she was regularly rewarded with recognition that let her know she had made the right career choice: 1. twice selected as the county English/Language Arts Teacher of the Year, 2. twice selected as the county Secondary Teacher of the Year, 3. recognized as Radio Station WJLS Teacher of the Month (determined by call-in student votes), 4. received numerous letters of thanks from successful college students and their parents, 5. had more than 50 students win awards and scholarships based on class learning, 6. witnessed so many students deal with careers and life situations (many becoming teachers themselves) as a result of success in her classes. She follows a lifetime of working with young people, teaching how to write, in now writing books for children and grandparents that will help them bridge the gap between these two ages. She reminds the reader and potential writer, "Everyone has a story to tell. This book represents only a small part of my story."
