Mit den neueren Entwicklungen im Bereich der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien ist der Vertrieb über das Internet für viele Unternehmen mittlerweile zu einem wichtigen Standbein geworden. Insbesondere das Einkaufen im Internet erfreut sich zunehmender Beliebtheit bei den Konsumenten. Die Attraktivität des Internets als Vertriebskanal für Waren und Dienstleistungen ist ungebrochen. Jahr für Jahr steigen die Umsätze im deutschen Online-Handel und das Wachstum soll auch in Zukunft noch weiter anhalten. So stellt der bvh in seiner neuesten Studie fest, dass im Onlinegeschäft für das Jahr 2012 eine Umsatzsteigerung gegenüber dem Vorjahr von 27,2% auf die neue Rekordsumme von 27,6 Milliarden Euro realisiert werden konnte. Damit wurden 70 Prozent des gesamten Branchenumsatzes nur über das Internet erzielt. Auch für die kommenden Jahre werden ähnliche Wachstumsraten im Online-Handel prognostiziert. Das Potenzial scheint immer noch nicht ausgeschöpft und dennoch begegnet der klassische Handel dem Internet nach wie vor misstrauisch. Dies scheint sich nun zu rächen, denn der Online-Handel boomt, während der klassische (stationäre) Handel auf der Stelle tritt. Der Hauptgrund für die teilweise Ablehnung des klassischen Handels gegenüber dem Internet liegt darin, dass die Nutzung des Internets als Vertriebskanal nicht nur Chancen sondern auch Risiken mit sich bringt. Um sich dennoch dem Trend zu stellen und sein Geschäft an die allgemeine Entwicklung anzupassen, muss die richtige Kombination von Online- und Offline-Aktivitäten im Rahmen eines Multi-Channel-Marketings festgelegt werden.
