Essay aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Kunst - Kunstgeschichte, Note: 2, Universität Salzburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem "Berner Totentanz", dem wohl bedeutendsten Werk des Schweizer Malers und Dichters Niklaus Manuel Deutsch. Es stellt sich die Frage, ob Niklaus Manuel Deutsch bestimmte Standesvertreter und Musikinstrumente bewusst in Kombination abgebildet hat, oder ob diese Kombinationen willkürlich erfolgten. Der aus insgesamt 46 Einzelbildern bestehende Totentanz entstand in Gemälden und Versen in den Jahren 1516-1519 und wurde auf die Innenseite der Mauer des Laienfriedhofs im Dominikanerkloster in Bern aufgetragen. Es werden die Bilder "Konzert im Beinhaus", "Tod und Priester", "Tod und Kaiser", "Tod und Königin" sowie "Tod und Dirne" analysiert. Wann genau das Thema des Totentanzes entstanden ist und wo dessen Ursprung liegt, ist unbekannt, er soll seine Wurzeln aber mindestens in drei Teilbereichen haben. Zum einen findet man das Thema des Tanzes, dessen Verbindung mit dem Tod auf den ersten Blick äußerst sonderbar erscheint und einen Widerspruch in sich birgt, bedenkt man, dass ein Toter eigentlich nicht mehr tanzen können dürfte. Der Tanz ist Sinnbild des Lebens, wodurch die Verbindung zwischen Tanz und Tod eine gewisse Ironie ausdrückt. Der Tod ist das Gegenbild des Lebens und gerade dieser ruft den Menschen auf dem Weg in das Beinhaus durch den Tanz die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens ins Bewusstsein. Eine zweite Wurzel findet sich in den sogenannten Vadomori-Gedichten, die gegen Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts aufkamen und in denen sich Repräsentanten einzelner Stände in Doppelversen über ihr Schicksal und ihren bevorstehenden Tod beklagen. Hier liegt der Ursprung eines weiteren Merkmals des späteren Totentanzes: die Gruppierung nach Ständen. Die dritte Wurzel befindet sich in der Legende von den drei Leben und den drei Toten, was wiederum für das Doppelgänger-Motiv und den dialogischen Charakter des Totentanzes von essentie
