Lough Ree, May 1997.
Terror can come at any time, even during a routine days work.
A mad scientist with a dangerous obsession.
A secret island on an ancient lake.
Five individuals on a cruiser thrown into a life or death struggle.
And one very angry, very tough, old man on a suicide mission watching them.
A classic exploration of what could happen when bad science collaborates with big business
Former Lough Ree Laboratory environmental employee Catherine Coles must lead a group of four others onto Lough Ree to kill a mutated monster that has escaped from a local textile manufacturing factory. It is genetically engineered bacteria; it was put there to consume toxic waste. No one however envisioned what it might do in a living eco-system like a lake. It's May and the tourist season is just beginning. As bodies turn up semi-devoured on the lake and onshore the pressure mounts on the five to stop this hideous creature. But not all of them share the same motivation.
What reviewers say about Mutation:
"A Crichton-Esque basis in fact to the premise, which makes it a book that will likely haunt you long after you've closed the cover." - C. Lovett, reviewer
"As an environmental scientist, I found the whole thing plausible and interesting."
- B. McLeann, reviewer
"There is a supernatural edge to this book, drawing on the lakes many myths and legends."
