El autor argumenta que nuestra civilización actual está construida sobre una base de violencia, codicia y lucro, y que esto ha creado un mundo en el que los seres humanos se reducen a meras mercancías, privados de su humanidad y de su capacidad para llevar una vida plena.
El autor comienza describiendo la "larga noche de la mercancía", que se refiere a la influencia omnipresente del mercado en todos los aspectos de la vida humana. Esto ha creado una sociedad donde todo se reduce a una etiqueta de precio y donde las personas son tratadas como meros objetos para comprar y vender.

El autor argumenta que este sistema tiene fallas fundamentales y que es hora de una revolución que conducirá a una nueva forma de vida. Esta revolución se basará en el rechazo de la mercancía y la búsqueda de los verdaderos placeres de la vida.
El autor describe un aburrimiento y una desilusión crecientes con las alegrías de la supervivencia, que no son más que los placeres de un mundo al revés. En cambio, argumenta el autor, debemos abrazar la lujuria sin reservas y el placer gratuito como las únicas armas que tenemos contra el sistema que busca controlarnos.
El autor argumenta que la revolución ya no se trata del rechazo a la supervivencia, sino de la búsqueda del placer y el disfrute propio. Esto requerirá la destrucción del sistema gobernante, que se basa en la mercantilización de la existencia humana.
El autor concluye advirtiendo que quienes se opongan a esta revolución lo harán con una violencia inimaginable. Intentarán mantener el statu quo, incluso si eso significa destruir a quienes buscan cambiarlo.
