About the Book

La palabra comic nació en EE. UU. para designar en un principio, los dibujos humorísticos como Yellow Kid pero luego, con el paso del tiempo, fue abarcando otros campos, como la aventura, la ciencia ficción, el género policíaco... El cómic en prensa, se orientó en sus comienzos a la gente trabajadora que, en los albores del siglo XX, muchos eran inmigrantes que no dominaban bien el idioma inglés. Al ir orientado al consumo de masas, siempre ha sido considerado (hasta hace pocos años), como un arte menor, un arte de usar y tirar, que en definitiva no era arte; entendiendo el arte como algo al alcance de minorías privilegiadas. El cómic siempre ha sido un reflejo, más o menos claro, del momento social en el que se desarrolla. Como prueba fehaciente de ello, tenemos los cómics de Dick Tracy, surgido cuando la depresión estadounidense, y el posterior auge de las bandas armadas los conocidos como gangsters; también tenemos a Terry and the Pirates que, junto con muchos otros personajes como The Phantom y Flash Gordon, reflejan lo que en ese momento se denominaba el peligro amarillo, causa esta por lo que, al comienzo, los malvados de turno tienen rasgos orientales. Los personajes anteriormente citados, junto con otros más, y al igual que ocurrió en el ámbito de los comics book, también se verán envueltos en el conflicto por excelencia como fue la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y que supuso un punto de inflexión en el devenir de los cómics de prensa. A raíz de ese devastador conflicto, vendrá otra guerra soterrada, la época de la llamada guerra fría entre occidente y la URRS, que se reflejará en cómics como Johnny Hazard, Terry and the Pirates y James Bond, basado en las novelas de Ian Fleming. El cómic también se hace eco, de la toma de conciencia de la mujer, en un momento en que ésta lucha por equipararse al hombre en el aspecto socio-laboral. Surgen así cómics (más en los comic books que en la prensa diaria), en los que ella es la protagonista, Modesty Blaise, Mary Wort
