Nachdem nun fast drei Jahre verflossen sind, seit ich aus den Wildnissen Afrikas zurückgekehrt bin, setze ich mich hin, um dem wiederholten Wunsche wohlwollender Freunde gerecht zu werden und nehme die Beschreibung meiner Reise nach den grossen Victoriafällen des Zambesi in die Hand. Den Leser muss ich im Voraus bitten, keine zu hohen Forderungen an meine Leistungen zu stellen, da ich weder im Besitz einer regen Phantasie bin, noch die besiegende Gewandtheit einer geschulten Feder mein eigen nennen darf; indessen liegt mir Alles daran, Erlebtes der Wahrheit gemäss zu schildern, und darum verlasse ich mich auch weniger auf die Kraft des Gedächtnisses, als vielmehr auf die Hülfe eines ausführlich und gewissenhaft geführten Tagebuches, welches so zu sagen die Basis meiner ganzen Erzählung werden wird. Auch, ich will es gestehen, trägt mich die schwache Hoffnung, dass meine mit so viel Mühe und Kosten erkämpften Erfahrungen in diesem an Hindernissen aller Art so reichen Kontinent einst dazu dienen werden, nachfolgenden Reisenden von Nutzen zu sein. Die Reise in den Jahren 1869 und 70 war nur eine Folge der Expedition nach dem Zululande von 1866, die indessen fast ausschliesslich nur zum Zwecke der Jagd unternommen wurde. Ich hatte aus jenem verhängnisvollen Zauberbecher getrunken, den die Circe kredenzt, die über ein wechselvolles und phantastisches Wanderleben wacht, ein Dasein, welches meinen Neigungen so sehr entspricht; in die Regionen europäischer Kultur zurückgekehrt, sehnte ich mich nach kurzer Rast wieder hinaus, hin nach den Felsenbarrieren der Khalambas, nach den wildreichen Ebenen der Luciabay und des Transvaals, nach der Romantik des Lagerlebens; wo Nachts der donnernde Ruf des Löwen zu uns herüber dringt, wenn des Südens Sterne flimmern, wenn ums lodernde Feuer geschart die nervigen Nimrods, Söhne Afrikas, in Erinnerungen schwelgend, Episoden aus ihrem wilden und gefahrvollen Leben vortragen.
