About the Book

Als ich Ende Februar 1915 wieder durch Berlins lange, gerade Straßen wanderte, lag eine weiße Schneedecke über dem Asphalt, und federleichte Flocken wurden scharf von dem Licht beleuchtet, das aus den Schaufenstern strahlte. Sonst war alles wie im Herbst des Vorjahres, als ich von Berlin aus meine Fahrt zur Westfront antrat. Der Verkehr hatte nicht merkbar abgenommen. Es wimmelte von jungen Leuten, die noch keine Uniform trugen. Berlin beherbergte noch Armeekorps nicht einberufener Männer, die ihren Geschäften wie im tiefsten Frieden nachgingen. Aber überall sah man auch Scharen von Soldaten, alte und junge, auf Urlaub daheim oder in der Ausbildung, alle mit dem Blick, den das Gefühl unüberwindlicher Kraft verleiht. Aus den Augen jedes einzelnen leuchtete sozusagen ein Abglanz von den Siegen in Masuren, Großpolen und Frankreich. Noch spürte man den Nachhall des Jubels nach der großen Winterschlacht, aber die Stimmung war ruhig und getrost, und nichts verriet, daß dieses Deutsche Reich seit sieben Monaten mit der halben Welt im Kriege lag. Weshalb hätte auch die Stimmung schwer und gedrückt sein sollen? Harte Krisen waren überwunden. Die in Friedenszeiten geschmiedeten Waffen verrichteten gute Arbeit, und die Kriegsvorbereitungen auf allen Gebieten hatten jede Prüfung mit erstaunlicher Leichtigkeit bestanden. Die Kriegsorganisation, die jeden an den rechten Platz gestellt und alle schlummernden Kräfte, persönliche und unpersönliche, zur Tätigkeit geweckt hatte, schien eine merkwürdige Fähigkeit zu haben, das Ergebnis der Arbeit zu vervielfachen. Eine gute Erziehung, die vom Grundprinzip des Lebens ausging - dem Willen zum Leben -, trug reiche Früchte. Vor kurzem hatte mich ein Freund auf die Einleitung zur deutschen Felddienstordnung hingewiesen, die folgende bedeutungsvollen Worte enthält: "Ohne Scheu vor Verantwortung soll jeder Offizier in allen Lagen - auch den außergewöhnlichsten - seine ganze Persönlichkeit einsetzen, um seinen Auftrag zu erfüllen. Die höheren Vorgesetzten müssen dieses Einsetzen der Persönlichkeit anregen und fördern." Deutschlands ganzes Volk trug dieses stolze Gebot in sein Herz geschrieben.
