Um die in der Präambel angesprochenen Probleme und Schwierigkeiten zu bewältigen, muss die Menschheit zusammenhalten, global und langfristig im Sinne der nachhaltigen Entwicklung denken. Doch was ist nachhaltige Entwicklung? Benötigen wir diese überhaupt? Gibt es sie bereits? Wer muss aktiv werden, nur die Politik oder jeder Einzelne? In dieser wissenschaftlichen Hausarbeit mit dem Titel Nachhaltige Entwicklung im Geographieunterricht: Eine empirische Studie zu Wissen und Einstellung von Schülerinnen und Schülern stehen genau diese Fragen im Fokus. Es soll geklärt werden, wie unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler, also die heutigen Jugendlichen, mit diesem zukunftsweisenden Thema vertraut sind. Ich möchte herausstellen, welches Wissen bereits vorhanden ist und wo noch Klärungsbedarf besteht. Ist die nachhaltige Entwicklung bereits zu ihnen durchgedrungen und leben sie teilweise oder sogar ganz danach? Falls sie es nicht tun - welche Gründe existieren dafür? Die Arbeit beginnt mit einem theoretischen Teil, der für ein besseres Verständnis der empirischen Sachverhalte sorgt. Zunächst wird darin die Frage geklärt, was nachhaltige Entwicklung auszeichnet und wieso wir sie unbedingt benötigen. Es folgt eine Darstellung der ehemals angewendeten Umweltbildung sowie eine Veranschaulichung, wie diese zur Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung umgestaltet wurde. Hierbei wird anfangs die internationale Ebene näher beleuchtet, die im Anschluss auf die Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung in deutschen Schulen und abschließend im Geographieunterricht reduziert wird.
