Unter anderem wurden marktführende Suchmaschinen wie Google oder Ecosia untersucht. In der Gesellschaft findet seit einigen Jahren ein Wandel statt, hin zu einem genügsamen und achtsamen Lebensstil. Dieser Wandel betrifft vor allem den Bereich der Nachhaltigkeit. Dabei meint Nachhaltigkeit in der Gesellschaft mehr als nur ökologische Aspekte, wie etwa das Energiesparen oder die Nutzung von Ökostrom. Nachhaltigkeit bedeutet neben ökologischen Gesichtspunkten auch eine Art Wissensaustausch oder Unterstützung von lebenserfahrenen Menschen. Zur Nachhaltigkeit zählen auch barrierefreie Zugänge für Menschen mit Beeinträchtigungen, damit diese in Zukunft auch an der Gesellschaft teilhaben können. Neben ökologischen, werden nun vermehrt auch soziale Aspekte berücksichtigt. Beim Nachhaltigkeitsbegriff geht es vor allem darum, heute so zu leben, dass künftige Generationen genauso leben können, wie die heutigen Generationen. Nachhaltigkeit spielt heute nicht nur in der Gesellschaft eine Rolle, sondern auch in zahlreichen Institutionen und Unternehmen. Gerade in Unternehmen wird Nachhaltigkeit als zentraler Wert und Leitlinie des wirtschaftlichen Handelns gesehen. Neben den Forderungen aus der Gesellschaft stellt auch der Gesetzgeber einige Forderungen in Bezug auf Nachhaltigkeit. Somit sind Nachhaltigkeitsmaßnahmen, die früher freiwillig waren, heute als gesetzlich verpflichtend anzusehen. Eine besondere Form des Unternehmens und des Geschäftsmodells sind Suchmaschinen. Suchmaschinen haben heutzutage eine starke Relevanz in der Lebenswelt vieler Menschen und sind der erste Anlaufpunkt, wenn etwas schnell beantwortet werden soll.
