'EL VALLE', UN LUGAR LITERARIO

La Mancha es para mí el primer lugar literario. Cervantes sitúa al hidalgo Quijana, Quijada o Quesada en un lugar que trasciende la historia y la geografía, y allana fronteras sin el menor esfuerzo. Pero al hablar de La Mancha tengo que referirme a Yonville y Flaubert, Faulkner y Yoknapatawpha, New York y Dos Passos, París y Cortázar, Macondo y García Márquez, El Río, Santa María y Onetti, Región y Juan Benet o El Páramo y Luis Mateo Díez, y todos a los que dejo sin nombrar, donde New York y París son tan literarios como los otros.

Con estos antecedentes, el reto no es menor: 'El Valle' puede ser un valle cualquiera, con elementos sacados de acá o de allá. Carmelo, Dorotea, Manuel, Josefa, Blanca, Diego, Marta, Norma y otros andarán por este lugar de fábula, donde la vida y la muerte se ven las caras con las pasiones que conlleva el hecho de existir. Y junto a 'El Valle', al norte, al sur o alrededor, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisboa, New York, Valencia...

El título de esta serie, Nada quedó de abril, está sacado del poema con que Manuel Vázquez Montalbán inicia su obra, Una educación sentimental. También lo podría haber titulado 'Abril', a secas. En cualquier caso, Abril, a mi juicio, tiene ya de por sí su propia fuerza: el poema de Vázquez Montalbán comienza: "Era distinto abril, entonces / había alegría, y rastro de mejillones / en la escollera...", que, burla burlando nos lleva a la fecha del catorce del treinta y uno, con su antes y su después. El subtítulo, El libro de Carmelo, está dedicado al que considero personaje central de esta entrega, un hombre al que sería fácil llamar aventurero, pícaro o buscavidas, y, a decir verdad, puede que tenga un poco de todo. Obrero, tratante, contrabandista, revolucionario, pionero, en fin, Carmelo es un hombre con suficientes registros para ocupar un lugar señero en este mosaico de personajes no menos interesantes, que andan, medran, aman, gozan y sufren en el tiempo que les toca vivir.
