"Napoleon ist an allem schuld" - so lautet der Titel eines deutschen Spielfilms aus dem Jahre 1938. Und dies könnte ich auch als Motto der vorliegenden Publikation zu Napoleon Bonaparte voranstellen. Denn seit nun 40 Jahren - also seit meiner Jugend - befasse ich mich mit der Person und dem Zeitalter des kleinen und doch so großen Korsen, der wie so viele Menschen vor mir auch mich fasziniert und bis zum heutigen Tag nicht losgelassen hat. Ob man ihm nun mit einer positiven oder einer negativen Attitüde gegenübersteht - gleichgültig lässt er sicher nur die wenigsten. Frankreichs "Messias", der die Revolution beenden (im Sinne von "vollenden") sollte, war am 15. August 1769 beileibe nicht unter friedlichen Sternen geboren worden, und diese kriegerische Konstellation, die sein komplettes Leben prägte, dauerte bis zu seinem Tod an. In der Auseinandersetzung, wie er denn nun zu bewerten sei, lebt sie sogar über sein Ende hinaus fort und ist zu seinem 200. Todestag am 5. Mai 2021 erneut aufgeflammt - wenn auch nicht mit früherer Intensität. Seinen Erfolg verdankte Napoleon den "Rollen", die er zu spielen vermochte. Zum einen war er Schiedsrichter zwischen der alten und neuen Welt. Über den Parteien stehend, wollte er die Einheit herbeiführen, seine Einheit, und so wurde er Kaiser der Republik. Europa konnte ihn nur bezwingen, indem es stets neue Koalitionen gegen ihn schmiedete, was nicht leicht war. Denn Napoleon nutzte die Dynamik der politischen Gegensätze immer wieder zu seinen Gunsten aus. Er war sehr erfinderisch und intelligent, verfügte über ein ausgezeichnetes Gedächtnis und beherrschte die verschiedenartigsten Wissensgebiete: Militärstrategie, Mathematik, Geographie, Geschichte, Religion, Recht, Philosophie, Literatur und Wirtschaft. In fast allen Wissenszweigen und Berufen kannte er sich gut aus und schuf eine Einheit, in deren Zentrum er stand. Sein Vertrauen in diese Einheit bewog ihn denn auch, Europas Throne unter die Angehörigen der Familie Bonaparte zu verteilen. Selbst heiratete der aus niederem Adel stammende Napoleon mit Marie-Louise eine habsburgische Prinzessin und erhoffte sich, so die Zukunft seiner eigenen Dynastie zu sichern, doch diese Hoffnung war letztlich vergebens. Der Korse konnte seinen Wunschtraum nicht verwirklichen, denn nach dem Untergang seiner "Grande Armée" in Russland 1812 erhob sich Europa gegen ihn...
