Die Arbeit wurde mit dem Friedrich-Meinecke-Preis und mit dem Ernst-Reuter-Preis der Freien Universitat Berlin ausgezeichnet. Im November 1896 zogen einige Dutzend Polizisten ins Hinterland des Nordostens von Brasilien, um aufsassige Bauern zur Rason zu bringen. Ein halbes Jahr spater beendeten 10.000 Soldaten vor dem Lehmhuttendorf Canudos den Krieg mit einem Massaker. Die Arbeit von Dawid Danilo Bartelt ist mehr als eine der seltenen deutschen Studien zu einem Schlusselereignis der lateinamerikanischen Geschichte. Sie ist eine der fundiertesten historiographischen Arbeiten zu Canudos uberhaupt. Bartelt stellt nicht wie ublich das militarische Ereignis oder die religiose Bewegung in den Mittelpunkt, sondern untersucht das "diskursive Ereignis" Canudos. Die Verbindung von Diskursanalyse mit Politik- und Sozialgeschichte auf breitester Quellenbasis fordert zu Tage, dass die vielfaltige Rede uber Canudos weniger dem Krieg als einem universellen Verhaltnis galt: dem Verhaltnis von Zentrum und Peripherie oder Metropole und Hinterland - hier unter den Vorzeichen von Modernisierung und nationbuilding.
