In una scuola superiore di provincia il professor Perboni si trova ad affrontare un nuovo anno scolastico che non è affatto come tutti gli altri. Certo, gli studenti sono sempre bovinamente supini, i colleghi pettegoli e svogliati, i genitori tanto mediocri quanto molesti. A questo si aggiunge però che, scoperti per puro caso i suoi contatti con una casa editrice milanese per la quale traduce, colleghi e allievi - persino Baroncini, l'unico fra questi ultimi che lui apprezzi - gli affibbino imbarazzanti manoscritti, convinti che basti una sua raccomandazione per vederli finalmente pubblicati e coronare così il loro sogno di aspiranti scrittori. Sul fronte privato, le cose gli vanno anche peggio: nulla può più arginare la sua crisi matrimoniale e la moglie Sandra si trasferisce in Australia, portando via con sé la piccola Elisabetta, l'unica persona al mondo che Perboni ami davvero. In questo contesto deprimente, né la relazione extraconiugale con un'avvenente nuova collega, né le oscure minacce di uno strano uomo dei "Servizi" riescono a scalfire l'imperturbabilità di Perboni. Ma è la morte di Baroncini in circostanze misteriose a sconvolgerlo e a fargli capire di essere rimasto impigliato in un gioco pericoloso...

Marco Scaldini (classe 1960) è un insegnante, traduttore editoriale e scrittore.
