About the Book

In der Gegend von Hohenkrähen kamen zwei wandernde Handwerksbursche zu einer Kegelbahn, auf welcher der Spukgeist Poppele, der ihnen unbekannt war, allein Kegel schob. Er lud sie ein, um Geld mitzuspielen, was sie auch, trotz ihrer wenigen Kreuzer, darum thaten, weil er lauter Goldstücke einsetzte. Nicht lange, so hatten die Bursche ihre Baarschaft verspielt. Um sie darüber zu trösten, schenkte er jedem einen Kegel. Der eine schnallte den seinigen sich auf's Felleisen, der andere aber warf den ihm gehörenden in's Gras weg, sobald sie dem Poppele aus dem Gesicht waren. Nach einer Weile wurde dem erstern das Felleisen so schwer, daß er durch seinen Gefährten nachsehen ließ, und siehe, der Kegel glänzte und war von gediegenem Golde. Unverweilt lief nun der andere Bursche auf den Platz zurück, wo er den Kegel hingeworfen, und sah ihn auch noch daliegen; aber als er ihn aufheben wollte, erhielt er von Poppele, der plötzlich dastand, eine tüchtige Ohrfeige, wobei derselbe sprach: Den Kegel lässest Du liegen; Du hast ihn gehabt, warum hast Du ihn nicht behalten! Eine hochschwangere Frau von Schlatt bedachte unterm Grasen, daß sie bei ihrer Armuth und ihres Mannes Trunksucht im Wochenbett keine Labung haben werde, und that den Wunsch: der Geist Poppele möge ihr helfen. Da kam er, als Jäger, und fragte, was sie wolle. Nachdem sie ihm ihre Lage geschildert hatte, bat sie ihn um ein Fäßlein guten Weines. Er ließ sie gleich ein leeres von Haus herholen und füllte es dann aus einem andern, indem er sagte: Den Wein laß Dir schmecken, und Du brauchst nicht damit zu sparen; aber Deinem Mann darfst Du keinen Tropfen geben! Die Frau machte es so und schenkte auch andern Armen von dem Weine, der im Fäßlein kein Ende nahm. Nachdem sie den Bitten ihres Mannes, ihm auch von dem Wein zu geben, lange widerstanden hatte, erlaubte sie ihm endlich, sich ein Krüglein voll zu holen; allein als er den Hahn des Fäßleins aufdrehen wollte, stand Poppele plötzlich da und gab ihm eine derbe Ohr
