Einhergehend mit den großen Schulleistungsstudien PISA und IGLU wurde ein Diskurs bezüglich defizitärer Leistungen von Schülerinnen und Schülern angestoßen, der bis heute anhält. Der gemessene Bildungsmisserfolg deutscher Schülerinnen und Schüler in differenten Fächern zeichnete sich gerade im internationalen Vergleich als äußert prekär ab. So schnitt Deutschland in den ersten Erhebungen sowohl im Bereich der Naturwissenschaften als auch im Kompetenzbereich Lesen deutlich unterhalb der Erwartungen ab. Zwar bewirkten strukturelle Entwicklungen und gezielte Aufarbeitungen des allgegenwärtigen, PISA-Schocks' erhebliche Verbesserungen, es kristallisierte sich jedoch eine neue Risikogruppe innerhalb unseres Bildungssystems heraus, die vornehmlich männlich besetzt ist. Der hier durch die Leistungsstudien offerierte Hinweis auf geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede und Bildungsungleichheiten führte zu kontroversen Debatten innerhalb der Bildungsforschung, die recht bald die Jungen zu den neuen Bildungsverlierern erklärten. Während die Mädchen eher vom Abbau geschlechtsspezifischer Ungleichheiten profitierten, schienen männliche Schüler vermehrt hinter ihren Altersgenossinnen zurückzufallen. Bereits in der Grundschule sind solche Tendenzen deutlich geworden. Erklärungsansätze fokussieren heute im Bereich der Lesekompetenz - als eine der grundlegendsten Fähigkeiten in unserer Gesellschaft - einen engen Zusammenhang von Motivation und Kompetenzsteigerung. Zugleich zeigen Jungen eine starke Affinität hinsichtlich der Nutzung neuer Medien, die für die Förderung von Lesemotivation gewinnbringend genutzt werden könnte. Dieses Fachbuch beschäftigt sich daher mit der Fragestellung, ob ein gendergerechter Medieneinsatz zur Förderung der Lesemotivation von Jungen im Deutschunterricht der Primarstufe beitragen kann.
