New Direction
Alex walked to the spot on the river front, she stopped and looked across the river at Covington as she remembered that dark early morning that she and Trey had investigated their first case.
She had been as green at being a detective that she could have been. She had graduated from law school, had tried her hand as a lawyer in her mother's law firm but had quickly realized that it was not what she wanted to do. She quit and accepted a job as a deputy in a small town. The work and environment fit what she wanted to do. The pay left much to be desired, but she figured that in time she would work her way up.
Then her boss had suggested that she interview for a role in the Cincinnati detective unit.
The black Chief of detectives doing the recruiting made her an offer that enticed her to come to Cincinnati and be a lead detective in his department. Her arrival in Cincinnati and the beginning at the detective unit was a low. No other policeman wanted to be a partner with a black female detective.
The Chief found her a war hero partner, who she later found out was an alcoholic, but he had been willing to be her number two. He turned out to be the best person that could have been a partner to her. He was out standly brave and together they took on any case that came their way. Over the years and many cases, he had been fearless and steadfast.
She was able to pull in Bill and Trevor to be a second team willing to work with her. She had recruited Johnnie off the streee and he became her internet magician.
Each case seemed to be more challenging than the previous one. Her successes earned her even harder cases. The years flew by.
She met Matt in Mississippi on one of the cases. He followed her back to Cincinnati and let her know that he was going to pursue her until she accepted him. There was never a doubt in her mind of her acceptance.
Then one day she walked out on the porch of their Mount Adams home to find Aurea, who had been left there by desperate parents who were subsequently killed.
Aurea changed her and Matt's lives.
They adopted her. Alex realized that she wanted to raise her as her parents had raised her.
She resigned her position and moved back to the house where she had grown up.
She had the ability to start a new business. She bought the marina where her father kept the fishing boat that the two of them had spent many hours in.
Aurea loved her new grandparents.
Matt was excited about running the marina.
Alex knew that she had made the right decision. She was ready for the new direction that her life was taking her.
