Thanks to the imprudent talk about " reserve " in matters of religion, but above all to the lawyer-like ingenuities of Tract Ninety, many were convinced that he had been a traitor in the service of Rome, undermining the Establishment. Not one of his relatives would follow him; Francis Newman gave up the idea of Revelation, the two Mozleys drifted into Liberal waters. So completely had the great teacher broken with his past, that he " thought of betaking himself to some secular calling." He had given up his sword to Wiseman with a saintly meekness. It was restored to him on fresh terms; he went down to the battle again, and his later campaigns were as full of surprises and vicissitudes as his first, but they ended in victory. Whatever comes of it, the Church of England owes to Newman its revived influence and its present form.
