About the Book

In four months of four summers, Dave and Sally Hall rode their bicycles across America from Seattle, Washington, to Bar Harbor, Maine. Their story offers a window into America from 1999 to 2003 as they experienced it on that journey. Pedaling through the mists of the Pacific Northwest, across snowy mountains, along great rivers, over golden plains, around Great Lakes, and through the remains of turbulent history to the rocky shores of Maine on the Atlantic, they were transformed by the beauty of America and the generosity of her people. In middle age, without reservations and carrying their own gear, they embraced adventure and, along the way, became healthy and strong. The book describes the pleasures as well as the challenges of their personal journey of discovery, includes some history, and provides maps, photos, useful websites, and touring tips.
About the Author: Sally Hall moved to Honolulu with her husband Dave in 1971. Their two sons were born and raised in Honolulu. For eighteen years, she taught English in the University of Hawaii system at Honolulu Community College. She has also contributed articles about neighborhood issues and bicycling to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Honolulu Advertiser, newspapers that in 2010 merged into the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Since completing their cycling journey across the northern United States, Dave and Sally have toured on their bicycles in Ireland; in southwest Utah; in the Pyrenees and Alps in France; on the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia; in Glacier National Park in Montana and Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada; in Quebec on a section of La Route Verte; and in southwest Montana. Sally does the planning. Dave is the navigator and mechanic. They tour almost always without reservations and always with fully loaded panniers. In addition to bicycle touring, they have two sons, two daughters-in-law, three grandsons, and one granddaughter to bring them joy.
