About the Book

Susan McAlister knows exactly what she will do with her life and so far everything has gone according to plan. Until David Graham. Her senior year at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill is on schedule until this long-haired, tattooed Cherokee from Oklahoma appears and Susan loses control of her carefully choreographed life. All about heritage, David talks freely about Cherokee history but is mum about why he came to Chapel Hill, what he does for a living, and the past that holds him hostage. As Susan peels away his secrets, she questions not only her timeline but who she might become if she adjusts her long-standing aspirations to include him. When tragedy wrecks any semblance of order and "happily ever after" drains away, Susan must decide if an imperfect life is worth living and if imperfect people are worth loving. To do either will require a surge of resilience and a depth of resolve she has never before needed or known. Set in a southern town where basketball is Lord, Cheerwine is a soft drink, and shag is a dance performed to rhythm and blues, No Such Thing as a Cherokee Princess is the story of a young woman who discovers herself and those she can trust--and really love. The book includes questions for individual reflection and group discussion. Cover art Indian Princess, copyright Dawn Thomas McKelvy, www.dawnmckelvy.blogspot.com, used with permission.
About the Author: Barrie Miller Kirby began her writing career as a teenager reporting on girls' softball games for a small southern newspaper. Now a minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), she writes mostly sermons and hopes they are better than her sports reports. In recent years she has published flash fiction, short fiction, non-fiction, newspaper columns, book reviews and poetry in print media and online. No Such Thing as a Cherokee Princess is her first novel. A native of Virginia, Barrie now lives in the North Carolina Piedmont with her husband. Their daughters are grown. Angus, the Scottish terrier, still lives at home.
