Nostradamus, visionnaire par un don inné comme il l'affirme dans sa première épître, et occultiste par une arithmologie qui lui est propre, est à la croisée et l'aboutissement du prophétisme médiéval et de ses deux courants, didactique et revendicatif chez Joachim de Flore, Arnaud de Villeneuve, Jean de Roquetaillade ou Savonarole, et purement visionnaire et féminin chez Hildegarde ou Brigitte de Suède. Nostradamus a mis en place un dispositif permettant à son texte de subsister dans toute sa cohérence, un dispositif si "occulte" qu'il a pu échapper à la perspicacité des exégètes de son oeuvre pendant quatre siècles et demi. La démonstration est l'objet même de cet ouvrage. L'ensemble des 1130 quatrains du corpus versifié (942 Qs des Prophéties, 154 des Almanachs, plus 34 laissés en manuscrit ou par son secrétaire Chavigny) s'inscrit dans les équations suivantes, avec les seuls nombres 13 et 22 hérités de son Testament (1566): 1130 = (13 × 13) + (31 × 31) ou encore 1130 = (13 × 13) + (13 × 13) + (13 × 22) + (22 × 22) + 22.
