About the Author: Michael Ende (Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 1929 - Filderstadt, 1995) fue un narrador alemán especializado en literatura infantil. Hijo del pintor surrealista Edgar, quizás heredara de su padre el gusto por la imaginería fantástica y por la extraña plasticidad de las imágenes. Empezó a escribir desde muy joven, inicialmente atraído por el teatro, pero pronto se hizo más intenso su gusto de puro «fabulieren», que encontró su adecuada forma expresiva en la literatura juvenil.

En 1958 escribió su primer libro, Jim Botón y Lucas el maquinista, que no sería publicado hasta 1960, seguido, en 1962, de Jim Botón y los trece salvajes. No obstante haber sido traducido y premiado en muchas ocasiones, el verdadero gran éxito le llegó con Momo (1972), novela-fábula que es bastante más que un libro para muchachos: narra la historia de una niña que se enfrenta a los ladrones del tiempo y reconquista el tiempo para los hombres.

La fama internacional del escritor se consolidó con La historia interminable (1979), en la que Ende dio vida a un complejo mundo fantástico, rico en referencias e implicaciones filosóficas y literarias. Es la historia del niño Bastian, que leyendo un libro fantástico llega a formar parte de él hasta convertirse en su protagonista, y consigue ser el héroe y salvador de un mundo destinado al desastre.

En sus páginas, la capacidad del autor para la creación fantástica, la coherencia estilística y conceptual, la intensidad de los símbolos y la riqueza de las imágenes, ofrecen lo mejor de Ende y hacen de él uno de los autores más leídos durante aquellos años. En 1984, Ende publicó El espejo en el espejo, relatos surrealistas inspirados en las obras de su padre, que revelan nuevas aspiraciones de carácter intelectual.

El escritor vivió en Genzano (Roma) desde 1970 hasta 1985, año en que regresó a Munich tras el fallecimiento de su esposa, la actriz Ingeborg Hoffmann; posteriormente contrajo matrimonio con Mariko Sato, traductora al japonés de La historia interminable.
