Elmar Frost fahrt wie gewohnlich auch in diesem Jahr in den wohlverdienten Urlaub. Die diesjahrige Reise soll jedoch ein Wendepunkt in seinem Leben bringen. Elmar ist nach einem langen Singleleben auf der endgultigen Suche nach einer passenden Frau. Da er die ostafrikanischen Frauen ganz besonders mag, nimmt er sich vor, ein junges, solides und unabhangiges Madchen aus Kenia zu heiraten.Auf dem Hinflug nach Mombasa lernt er seinen baldigen Freund Vincent Baum kennen. Da beide im selben Hotel wohnen, unternehmen sie gemeinsam schon bald eine selbst organisierte und zusammengestellte, vierzehntagige Safari durch Kenia. Noch wahrend der Rundreise stirbt Elmars Vater in Deutschland.Diese einmalige Safari gibt Elmar genugend Gelegenheit, uber seine Sehnsuchte, sein Leben, das Leben seines Freundes Vincent und das der afrikanischen Bevolkerung nachzudenken.Ein Kurzbesuch bei ihrem Ranger Mutiso in Machakos zeigt ihnen hautnah den afrikanischen Alltag.Zuruck an der Kuste, unternehmen Elmar und Vincent kurze Ausfluge und amusieren sich nachts in den verschiedenen Bars leger, aber nicht ausschweifend mit Prostituierten. Um das alltagliche Leben der Kenianer besser studieren zu konnen, zieht Elmar fur zwei Wochen in ein kleines, lokales und sehr sauberes Gastehaus nach Ukunda. Im Restaurant Hollywood trifft er sich tagsuber regelmaßig mit im Ort wohnenden, weißen Kenianern. Durch eine Freundin von Vincent lernt er im Pavillon zufallig seine Traumfrau Nuri kennen. Noch bevor Elmar zuruck ins Hotel zieht, stirbt sein Freund Vincent.Mit Nuri hat Elmar die Frau furs Lebens gefunden und schon im darauffolgenden Jahr heiraten sie in Deutschland. Nach weiteren drei Ehejahren kaufen sie in Ukunda ein großes Grundstuck und bauen ein afrikanisches Haus fur sich und Nuris Mutter.Im funften Ehejahr verstirbt dann Elmars Mutter.Und nach nunmehr acht Ehejahren konnen beide sagen, dass sich ihre afroeuropaische Partnerschaft zumindest fur sie personlich gelohnt hat und sie bis jetzt glucklich sind.Der autobiographisch gepragte Roman soll unter anderem eine private Sicht fur die Unantastbarkeit, die Annaherung, den Respekt und die behutsame Zusammenfuhrung zweier doch sehr unterschiedlicher Kulturen zum Ausdruck bringen.Den dringenden Wunsch an alle Leser zu richten, verstarkter die Einzigartigkeit anderer Kulturen zu respektieren. Das war im Ubrigen auch ein Schwerpunktthema von Papst Benedikt XVI auf seinem Deutschlandbesuch im September 2006. Die Europaer mussen unbedingt lernen, mit dem Fremden und einer ungewohnten Kultur verstandnisvoller umzugehen.
